CH.559 Date with Unika

CH.559 Date with Unika

… okay, I lied. I did half of that already.

Yeah. It really didn’t take that long for me to learn Tamer’s Paradise. It is a complicated skill, for those that don’t understand parallel dimensions, mental dimensions, Space Magic and so on. But I’ve more or less figured out all of that, so it really just took an afternoon of trying for me to get the skill.

And because I can now move them around easier, I want to tame more monsters. So I decided to head out in a random direction and hope for the best.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om

And because I was taming something, I brought Unika along and turned it into a date.

We first flew to some random place Unika picked. I just let her fox instincts, even if she doesn’t have that skill, guide us somewhere.

From there, we got out of the ship, I transformed into a dragon and we flew. Luckily I knew all the towns and cities in the area, so I was able to avoid them. Sure there could be some people on the roads between the places who spotted us, but I don’t care. Flying on a tamed dragon, or in this case, transforming into a dragon, isn’t illegal. You just have to land some ways away from any city or town.

I then let Luna, my owl, out of Tamer’s Paradise to help us look … for something. We actually don’t have any goal in mind. We are just going to fly somewhere, and maybe tame something.

After about an hour, we decided to have a short break. To let Luna rest, and to just enjoy nature. We found a nice clearing for it, I set out a blanket for us, and we had some snacks.

While we were enjoying the snacks, Unika caught a small bird with just her bare hands, and showed me how to do a temporary tame.

Temporary tames weren’t that different from the permanent ones, naturally. You just had to purposefully make sure the monster understood it was just for a bit. It might sound difficult, but it is actually really easy. Probably easier than permanent tames.

I think monsters just accept temporary servitude easier. But Unika also told me that sometimes a temporary tame becomes permanent by accident. It has happened to her a few times, and she had to kill the tamed monster in the end, because of the monetary situation of her family. They couldn’t afford to feed more tamed monsters, even if they may have enabled Unika to make a bit more money as an adventurer.

As we were about to head out again, I noticed something moving the tall grass at the edge of the clearing. I assumed it would be some big monster based on the area in which I saw the grass move, so I put up my guard. I generated a pair of Magical Arms and sent them to reveal the monster in the grass, but as I tried to reveal it, whatever monster was hiding there began to move quickly.

Quickly towards us that is. And as it got to the shorter grass, we saw what it was.

… And it was just a common snake. An F-rank snake monster. The weakest there is.

“Oh? A snake. Let’s ignore it and go.”

“... Yeah.” I agreed, as I looked at the snake. “... what can snakes evolve into?” I asked myself. “... Yeah. I’m taming it.” I decided.

“Why? It’s just a snake. A common snake. We’ve seen forest snakes and you ignored them, so why do you want this one?”

“... feeling, I guess. I guess my dragon instincts tell me to tame it.”

“... you should have turned into a Fenrir instead. You could have tamed something fluffy.”

“Don’t need something like that. I have you.” I told her, and got Unika to blush.

I used my Magical Arms to capture the common snake and brought it to me. The snake tried to struggle free at first, but quickly submitted as I brought it to me.

It was a strange color, a dull blue. Most of the time, common snakes are different shades of green. Or some sort of sand color if they live in a sandy area. Or gray if they live in a rocky area. But in a forest, you’d expect a greenish colored snake.

Well, at least it isn’t an albino snake. That would have been even more rare.

I got a small chunk of raw meat out of Storage, made another Magical Arm and offered the meat to the snake with it. While I did so, I began to gently run my hand down the snake’s body, while giving it just the tiniest amount of mana.

I had to be very careful not to put too much mana into it because of my level and Mana Control. If I put too much into it, I’ll overload the snake’s mana circuits and either injure it badly, or kill it.

The snake seemed to enjoy the service, and soon enough, I had it tamed.

“... now you need a name. Can’t name you Indigo, cause someone already has that name.” I spoke to myself, while I continued to pet the snake.

“... why did you even tame it?” Unika asked. “Like really. It is just a snake.”

“As I said, felt like it.” I repeated. “Did you know that when I still lived in my old world, I kind of wanted to have a snake as a pet?”

“... you don’t talk about those times that often, so no. Why a snake though?”

“Good question. I just wanted one. Maybe because I love dragons?”

“I don’t see the connection.”

“Well, my old world didn’t have dragons. They were legends. Stories. Myths.”

“Like the Hero’s party?”

“Yes, but also no. We can confirm that the Hero’s party existed. That is a fact. And because of the System and the Goddess, we can confirm that they did at least most of what is said that they did. So that isn’t a legend or a myth in the same way.” I told her. “Our legends didn’t base on something like that. At least we couldn’t prove that they did. But still somehow almost all cultures had legends of dragons.”

“Depending on where in the world the legends came from, they’d look different. Like the western dragons. They are what we call ‘dragons’ here. Four legs, two wings, large body, breath fire. Well, here they breathe whatever element they have, but in my world, it was fire, and rarely something like lightning or poison. These dragons were often depicted as being ‘evil and destructive’. And from the point of view of a person who can’t use magic or skills, surely they would be. But for a dragon, a regular person is no more special than this snake is for us.” I told Unika, as I stroked my new pet snake.

“Next were the eastern dragons. They looked more like Janina. Long, serpentine dragons, except they didn’t have wings. They were seen as god-like entities. Sure they may do evil things, but people believed that the evil they do is for the betterment of mankind.”

“... could they fly? They had no wings, right? So could they fly?” Unika asked.

“Yeah.” I confirmed.

“... how?”

“Magic, duh. I know my world didn’t have it. Or at least we couldn’t use it. But legends are legends for a reason. And would you question how a god flies without wings?”

“... I suppose I wouldn’t. I mean, you, Alice and Cailie can all fly despite not having wings. Even mom learned how to.”

“Exactly.” I told her. “Sure we can’t compare ourselves to gods, well arguably I can, because reasons.”

“Reasons?”

“Yeah. In a world like this, I’d say someone is a god-like being when they can influence the System to give out levels and skills. I can do both, so …”

“But you don’t call yourself a god.”

“No. I guess a demi-god. A God, a true God, is immortal, all being, all knowing, all doing. There is no God like that in this world. Not even the Goddess. She has told me multiple times she isn’t like that, so I don’t feel bad about saying that, even if someone might say that is sacrilegious. So tell me this, if both the Goddess and I can influence the System to give out skills and levels, what is the difference between us?”

“... I’m not sure.” Unika admitted.

“I’ll answer then. The scale at which we can do it. I can only do it to the person in front of me. The Goddess on the other hand can do it to every single person holding the System. At least I think she can.”

“I see…”

“But enough about Gods and Goddesses. Want to hear more about dragon myths?”

“... I guess, if you want to tell me more.”

I did just that, telling Unika about Quetzalcoatl, wyrms and wyverns. She was kind of blown away by how many of the mythical beings from my world were actual monsters, or just Janina. Because admit it. Janina is basically a mix between the Quetzalcoatl and an eastern dragon.

I ended up naming my new snake Aoi Koiru, though I'll call her Aoi. Which is Japanese for blue coil. Based on me reverse engineering Japanese using Iron Chain Coil.

Spoiler

Aoi I remember. Blue Angel, and her other variants, was an important character in VRAINS. So I remember her name at least. And Aoi fits a blue snake just fine. And yes, we confirmed that Aoi is female.

And no. I’m not calling her by her full name. She is just Aoi. I just felt like her name needed a bit more, so Aoi Koiru.

Luna wasn’t the biggest fan of the snake for some reason, and neither was Glad. But then again, Glad doesn’t get along with anyone, barely even me.

Rani was her usual self and accepted the new member of my family. I love that horse.

But that is about it for the day. I guess I can show you my status, since I did learn Tamer’s Paradise and all of that.
