Chapter 754: That Guy Sounds Like Cancer
I reentered the camp and found the slavers occupying the far corner away from everyone else.
I'm guessing Meela told them that this was an all female party and their client especially did not want to be approached by males.
The slaves were also a mix of males and females though I noted that none of them were Mahuns.
There were Nekomatas, Inugamis and even Trasifs amongst them and by the looks of it, it doesn't look like any of them were there unwillingly.
I say that because the slavers had gone ahead to unchain them and they were moving freely amongst the group and some were even talking to the slavers that had chained them up in the first place.
My surprise must have shown on my face because Meela chuckled beside me, "First time seeing slave traders I take it?"
"Well… Not exactly… I've been to slave markets before and met slave traders there but the compliant slaves are usually trained slaves… Are these trained slaves?"
She nodded, "They're coming from the Republic of Modgnik to be sold in Lehcarouc Kingdom. So yes, these slaves have already been trained."
That explains pretty much everything then.
I was wondering why these slaves didn't run away if the slavers were robbed since that would be a prime opportunity for them to seek freedom.
Then again, I guess the collars they were wearing on their necks also contributed to that.
But now I know these weren't slavers but slave traders. In other words, they were just a merchant convoy.
"So what exactly happened to them?" I asked.
She shrugged, "If you want the details, you'll have to ask them. I only learned that someone attacked them and stole everything from them aside for the slaves."
"Wait, 'someone'? One person did this?"
"That's what they claim. That's why I don't really trust them completely yet and I'll be posting more sentries tonight. Ermm… If Aster wants to have some fun though…"
I waved my hand at her, "I'll have to pass on that… I've had quite enough for the day. Maybe tomorrow."
She did not argue and simply nodded her head in understanding, although I did not miss the look of slight disappointment on her face.
Nevertheless, I wasn't going to give in on this one, particularly because I did not have an infinite number of those stamina potions that I got from Lisa.
While the others started to prepare for dinner, I decided to approach the slaver group to ask them about their situation.
If my hunch was right, the fact that one person did this to them pretty much told me that there's a high chance that an Off-Worlder was involved in this.
It may or may not even be my target too so it wouldn't hurt to ask.
I mean… At most, I would just learn about the existence of another Off-Worlder even if it turned out to be a bust.
The slave traders saw me approaching them and all of them except for one tried their best to look busy. The last one stepped away from the group to meet me.
He had chocolate brown skin that was almost completely covered by the clothes he was wearing with only his face and hands exposed.
"Hello there. I don't believe we've met? I'm Sameer, leader of this group. May I know your name?" He asked, sticking out his hand.
I touched it, "Aster, I heard about your situation."
He withdrew his hand and sighed, "Yes, I'm afraid our luck was really bad for us to end up like this. Thank you for allowing us to spend the night with your group. I fear if we had not found your camp, we might have perished out in the desert instead."
I shook my head, "Oh, I'm not part of this group actually. I'm pretty much the same as you. I got lost and found their group and they happened to be travelling towards the same place as I was so I hitched a ride with them."
"Really? Seems like we're both fortunate to meet up with this group in that case. So is there anything you need from us?"
"Yes. I was wondering what actually happened to your group? I only know that you were robbed but… They took everything except for the slaves?"
Sameer let out a sigh, "Yes. And it was just a single person who did this to us as well."
I looked behind him and counted at least a dozen people that weren't slaves before raising an eyebrow at him. That meant he had at least a dozen guards escorting him and they all lost to one guy?
He understood my silent question and shook his head, "I know this may sound ridiculous but he beat all of us up with one hand behind his back. I'm not even making that up. He literally put one hand behind his back before beating us to show the difference in power. You know what he did after he beat us?"
I looked at his clear lack of injuries and guessed, "He healed you guys?"
"Yes. He healed all of us and then demanded we hand over all our stuff to him."
"That sounds… Odd?"
"That's not even the weirdest thing… When he found out that we were transporting slaves, he tossed them all out of the wagons and took the wagons with him before leaving. I don't understand why he did that… If he wanted to rob us, why would he return us the most valuable commodity we had?"
I scratched my cheek, "Did he even know you guys were slave traders before he robbed you?"
"Apparently not. He even made a fuss about it when he was dragging the slaves out of the wagons too. If I had to guess, he only wanted the wagons, our supplies and our weapons."
Wagons… Supplies… Weapons… Sounds like this guy might be making use of those things to transport them somewhere else to arm a specific group of people?
"How many wagons did you have?"
"Three including the one that we used to transport the slaves."
I blinked at him, "How did one guy take all three wagons? Did he pile them up and carry them off or something?"
He grimaced, "Not… Not exactly. He had an enchanted bag that he stuffed the wagons into but he did stack our Dune Bison in a pile before carrying them off through a portal he made…"
Eh? If he's trying to arm people, he would only need the weapons and not the wagons since he not only has an enchanted bag but also the ability to teleport, right?
This doesn't make any sense… What even was his goal of robbing these slavers?
"Do you know why he robbed you then?" I asked.
He shook his head, "I don't think it's for money since that enchanted bag of his is already pretty expensive. And the fact that he had the strength to carry our Dune Bison like that… I don't know why he would even be a bandit instead of being a Mercenary."
I mean… I could think of several reasons why but now I'm about ninety percent sure this guy is an Off-Worlder.
"Could you tell me what he looked like?"
His brows furrowed slightly, "I wish I could… But he was wearing a mask the entire time. I would say the only thing that might identify him was the fact that he spoke rather weirdly."
I tilted my head at him, "How weirdly?"
"He would say some rather incomprehensible things like… Ermm… What did he say again? Something about his 'luck-metre' being 'off the charts' and that its a 'quantum anomaly' and something something 'skibidi toilet' or something."
…
Holy fuck. This isn't just an Off-Worlder… It's a brainrot Off-Worlder…
I sincerely hope that this guy isn't my target because I definitely don't want to deal with that. Heck, I'm afraid that I might even catch that brainrot if I were to meet him…
I groaned, "Did he do anything else then?"
He raised an eyebrow at me, "I apologise but… May I ask why you seem so interested in this person? Are you planning on catching him?"
I considered what I should tell him for a moment before nodding at him, "I suppose I should tell you that I'm a Mercenary as well though I'm not related to this group here, as I said. But I do have a quest where I'm hunting down specific people who are part of a cult. Right now what you said pretty much tells me that he might very well be one of them."
"Wait… You mean there's an entire cult of people who speak like that?"
"Well… Not exactly… At least the ones I'm hunting don't do that… It's just that they are really weird since they've been away from normal society and thus developed their own standards of common sense. Because of that, they intend to cause some trouble around and my client is keen on stopping that from happening. So if you know any other information about this guy, I could certainly use them."
He shrugged, "I would very much like to help you in that case but… I'm afraid that's the most that I know that I can give you, lady."
Hmmm… Oh well, at least knowing he has brainrot is quite a big identifier though I'm still not sure if he's my target. But this would make my search for such a person easier.
I guess I'll take what I can for now.
