Noelle's platoon split from Marguerite's and headed southwest of Leirune. When the lights in the village came into view, Noelle stopped her horse.

After hiding the horses in the woods, she marched silently with ten soldiers. Noelle approached the guarding skeleton soldier from behind, and, with a practiced hand, cut off his head and cracked his skull open. The next one they encountered, a golem, was surrounded by a large number of soldiers and cut down over time, as the established practice she had learned in the swordsmanship academy.

"Set it on fire. Burn the whole settlement to the ground."

The soldiers scattered, torches in hand, one by one. Noelle's squad was a diversion. They were tasked with killing the demons and setting fire to the town in order to create chaos in Leirune. Taking advantage of this opportunity they created, her mother's main force would attack the castle of Syness.

A human male rushed out of a burning house in panic. A soldier cut him down with his sword without hesitation. Noelle ground her teeth and looked away.

(They are traitors who have sold their souls to the demons.)

Repeatedly speaking it in her mind over and over again, as if to validate its righteousness. Suddenly, she noticed a huge monster standing in the middle of the road with the moon on its back.

"U-Uhouguru, Suzuiland, protect!"

(Ogre race... This village watchdog, perhaps?)

Like with the golem, Noelle instructed her soldiers to surround the demon---and then drew her sword from its scabbard.

"Forgive me... Takashi..."

In the darkness, he heard a voice. Takashi knew this was a dream. It is a dream he has had repeatedly since he was a child.

"I'm sorry... I'm really sorry..."

A woman's voice, whose face he did not recognize, echoed. It was the voice of the mother who abandoned him.

The things that he and Noelle had talked about earlier overlapped with the dream.

(Deeper reasons for not being able to raise me, huh?)

Indeed, his mother's voice in the dream sounded sad. What could have been the reason for not being able to raise him?

In his dream, Takashi longed to hear his mother's voice again. His mother's voice echoes in his brain.

"I apologize... but... right now... you have to wake up"

(Have to wake up?)

Suddenly, he woke up startled by Master Leelou's voice and realized that his body was being shaken violently. Excella, her cheeks wet with tears, kept shaking Takashi's shoulder.

"Orneo is... Orneo is...!"

He knew that this was something out of the ordinary. Takashi stumbled back as Excella pulled him by the hand. His head was spinning. He had never had such a bad night's sleep in his life.

Still, he had an ominous feeling about the sobbing Excella and rallied himself to enter the main tent.

"HU---!"

At that moment, Takashi thought he would stop breathing. Orneo, who was missing an arm, was lying in a pool of blood.

"W-We need to give him treatment!"

The copious blood seemed to be coming from his upper body. Excella sobbed and shook her head.

"He already... passed away."

"That's! Who in hell did this?"

"There's a wound consistent with a sword slash. Marguerite probably killed him."

"Marguerite?!? Why!!"

Excella wiped away her tears and silently walked out of the tent. The area was still and quiet, with not a single soldier in sight.

Excella pointed with her finger. The direction of Leirune, the one Takashi and the rest have come from, shone brighter than before.

(Are those... flames? A fire?)

"The Salvation Crusaders were about to invade Leirune... Orneo was probably killed for opposing them."

Excella stared at Takashi. And then, used a dignified voice in order to encourage him.

"I beg you, Lord Hero! Protect the people who live in Leirune!"

"Y-YA!"

.

While Orneo's death must have been heartbreaking. And yet, Excella was very determined. She begged him to protect the people of Leirune instead of herself, who could not run because of her slashed leg's tendons.

The Salvation Crusaders' soldiers were human. Takashi's abilities would not be effective. Nevertheless, knowing how Excella felt, Takashi immediately ran toward Leirune.
