Chapter 390: Ch.389 God-Slaying Potion
Chapter 390: Ch.389 God-Slaying Potion
Constantine shook his glass, and with a tilt of his head, downed the drink. Perhaps it was too hot, as he kept sucking in cool air, yet still raised his hand to ask for another drink.
"Ahh, Tracy and the others wanted to hold a small ritual—not one involving magic, just something for spiritual comfort." Constantine stuck out his tongue, continuing, "They stood hand in hand in a circle, praying to their respective gods for help to get through these times without magic."
"And then Witchfire was controlled by Hecate." Su Ming completed the thought.
"Pretty much. Maybe one of the girls was a follower of Hecate, and she answered the prayer." Constantine gave a strange smile.
"..." Su Ming bowed his head in thought.
"Suddenly, Witchfire started screaming, her body emitting a purple glow. She yelled for everyone to leave, but soon her voice changed—it wasn't her own voice anymore."
Constantine picked up his new drink, blowing on it. The surrounding air felt stiflingly hot, sweat streaming down his forehead.
But he sat firmly in his chair.
"That wasn't the pop star's voice," Su Ming confirmed.
"It was an old crone's voice—the kind that makes your skin crawl the moment you hear it, like my old landlady's." Constantine nodded and continued, "And then Witchfire burst into flames. The powerful fire spread instantly, like Hell's magma bubbling over."
"Some of the girls believed in Heaven or Hell, so they had the means to escape. But most couldn't get away," Su Ming added.
"This kind of flame, this kind of power—they were too young, they'd never seen it before, let alone faced a magical goddess." Constantine nodded firmly.
Su Ming removed his helmet, raising his hand for a drink. Seeing so many young girls die—it really was a shame. "So they all turned to charcoal."
"Yes, maybe that's just the fate they were dealt." Constantine spat on the ground, and a wisp of smoke rose from the scorched earth. "If any of them had hid behind me, they might have survived. But no one thought I could be relied on."
Su Ming raised an eyebrow, touching the hot glass in his hand. "Is that why you stayed? Relying on the demon blood as a shield?"
Constantine slumped back in his chair, spreading his hands. "Who knows, maybe I just wanted to die too. After all, none of us can escape."
"You mean the Source Wall, not Hecate." Su Ming tapped the table.
"Right. Batman's had me investigating something, and I've found a new clue. The thing Cheetah and the others stole from the ocean—it's called the 'Tears of Extinction.' It's a very powerful magical potion."
Constantine dipped his finger in his drink and drew a crude symbol in the ash-covered tabletop.
"I've never heard of it," Su Ming said, placing his phone on the table. Batman needed to hear this. Constantine probably guessed Batman was listening, which was why he didn't bother going back to the Hall of Justice.
"Do you know the 'Fountain of Youth'?" Constantine asked, scratching his beard as a flea fell out. "Or 'Water of Life'?"
Su Ming thought for a moment. He had heard of those things. "The Fountain of Youth is rumored to be in the Caribbean—a liquid that grants immortality. As for the Water of Life, it's more accurately called the 'Lazarus Pit.'"
"Ah, you're half right. The Fountain of Youth is actually a magical potion—a product of the Silver City, a drug angels use to reward devout followers." Constantine shook his head with a grin.
"A drug..." Su Ming murmured thoughtfully.
"It's the Fountain of Youth, not the Fountain of Immortality." Constantine looked disdainful, as if seeing something filthy. "You drink a sip every year to keep your youthful appearance, but it doesn't extend your life. And if you stop drinking it, you age ten times faster than normal."
"So the angels use it to control believers."
"Who knows, but I'd guess so." Constantine burped, poking at his ear with his finger.
The flames had been so hot earlier that a piece of earwax had dried and fallen out.
Su Ming took a sip of his drink. Hot liquor actually tasted pretty strange. Probably only a drunk like Constantine could enjoy it. "Why are you mentioning these two things?"
"Ah, because the Tears of Extinction, this magical elixir, is their dark counterpart. Just one drop, and even a god would die instantly." Constantine seemed to snap back to attention.
Su Ming rubbed his beard. "So now Lex Luthor has a god-killing poison. What would he do next—coat a blowdart with it?"
Constantine chuckled, accidentally inhaling some ash and coughing repeatedly.
"Cough... Knowing Luthor's style, I'd guess he'd coat a kryptonite spear or dagger with the poison. But more likely, he'd use Cheetah's claws—natural weapons, and Cheetah's speed is incredible. Even Barry would get caught by her."
Su Ming thought about it. When it came to gods, only Diana and Aquaman in the Justice League were remotely close.
Diana was hidden in Hell, very safe—Luthor likely wouldn't find her, especially since he had no magic users on his side.
But Aquaman... he might be in danger.
However, that wasn't Su Ming's concern. Let Batman worry about it.
Su Ming was currently in a fruit-snatching competition. He had secured two of the "fruits," and Hecate had one.
Except, the fruits on Su Ming's side were unusable, whereas Hecate had solidly gained more power.
Two marked individuals remained, meaning the next step was to weaken Hecate's power before a direct confrontation—ideally by securing another marked one and hiding them.
But finding two people in such a vast world would be very difficult.
Everything happening in the magical world was behind the Veil. Even Batman was mostly in the dark—he couldn't be relied on.
The only reliable ones now were the spellcasters, especially people like Arabella and Constantine, who were familiar with the infernal arts.
"So, want to join us?" Su Ming invited Constantine. Leaving him alone in an empty bar would surely drive Bobo crazy.
"No, I've got things to do." Constantine stood up, rubbing his backside. "I've got a date tonight with the best lady in Whitechapel—I already put down a 30-quid deposit."
Su Ming nodded understandingly. Constantine had a broad range of interests, and streetwalkers were one of them.
"Be careful. At times like these, it might be safer to head to Hell and hook up with a succubus."
"Tsk, don't bring up Lilith. Anyway, I'm out." Constantine waved, slipping out the bar door as if fleeing for his life. "Oh, and tell the monkey that Tracy survived. Nightshade took her into the Shadow Realm."
Su Ming turned to look at the detective chimp, who had nearly finished inspecting all the charred bodies, and showed a sad expression.
That was news Constantine could've mentioned from the start—rather than letting Bobo get up close and personal with dozens of scorched corpses...
