Chen Ming couldn’t help but complain on the spot. When joining the army, the first rule is to endure it if the squad leader scolds you. If you talk back, the squad leader will show you what it means to regret being alive.
The squad leader heard He Dong’s muttering, and his eyes showed cold authority. His voice deepened: “Fine since you don’t know the rules, I’ll make you understand. Go downstairs and run ten laps. My eyes will be on you. If it’s not ten laps…!”
The squad leader leaned down, got close to He Dong, and pointed to his eyes with his index and middle fingers. He then poked He Dong’s fat with force.
He Dong turned pale with fear.
Ten laps? This is like a death sentence!
While Chen Ming sympathised with He Dong, the squad leader shifted his focus and pointed to Chen Ming: “Chen Ming, you go down and run with me. I haven’t settled the score with you for playing games on the train.”
Chen Ming was caught off guard and quickly ran downstairs. He Dong and the others followed.
The squad leader then pointed to Yu Jun and He Xue: “Don’t think I don’t know you’re in cahoots. Go, run ten laps together.”
Confused, Yu Jun and He Xue followed Chen Ming. The squad leader shouted again, “If you don’t finish in half an hour, forget about dinner!”
Chen Ming, realising the urgency, ran downstairs swiftly. He Dong and the others followed Chen Ming without daring to argue.
The squad leader’s voice echoed, “What are you waiting for? If you think ten laps are too few, do you want to run more?”
The squad leader scolded them as they ran. Chen Ming adapted quickly. The squad leader then pointed at Yu Jun and He Xue again, asking them to run together. Confused, the two followed suit. The squad leader threatened, “If you don’t run for half an hour, forget about dinner!”
Chen Ming and the others, after completing ten laps, were exhausted. He Dong was struggling, but they made it. With a smirk, the squad leader warned them about the consequences of disobedience.
Others in the dormitory watched them from the windows. The monitors warned their recruits, emphasising the consequences of disobedience. Finally, after half an hour, Chen Ming and the others completed the ten laps. Exhausted, they were drenched in sweat.
With a satisfied grin, the squad leader brought the rest of the dormitory down. Seeing Chen Ming looking relatively fine, he was surprised: “This kid has good stamina. Running ten laps on the first day and still looking relaxed?”
However, the surprise in his heart wasn’t displayed on his face. He cleared his throat and said, “Line up. It’s dinner time. Follow me to the cafeteria.”
With the lesson from Chen Ming and his group, the five who didn’t run downstairs quickly formed a line, not daring to disobey the squad leader’s command.
Chen Ming and his group joined the line, and under the squad leader’s guidance, they headed towards the cafeteria.
During the march, the squad leader addressed everyone, “Remember, when you go out, pair up in twos or form a column if there are three or more. If caught by the picket and reported, I won’t spare you!”
In the army, when two people walk together, they form a line; when there are three or more, they form a column.
“Report, squad leader,” He Dong quickly reported before asking questions.
The squad leader glanced at him, a subtle smile on his face. The ten laps they ran had an impact.
“Speak,” the squad leader commanded.
He Dong asked, “Squad leader, what is a picket?”
The squad leader’s expression turned serious, “The picket’s duty is to inspect the military appearance and discipline of soldiers going out and check military vehicles for any violations.”
He elaborated, “In simpler terms, they are meticulous people. If caught by them, any slight discrepancy will result in points deducted!”
After this explanation, the squad leader snorted and cautioned everyone, “Remember, when you see someone with a white helmet and a red armband with the word ‘picket,’ either run away or ensure you’re in perfect order!”
“If caught and reported by the picket, I won’t forgive you!”
The squad leader took them to the cafeteria entrance and shouted, “Attention!” They stood still.
Reacting slowly, He Dong bumped into the squad leader. He stared and asked, “Squad leader, why did you stop?”
The squad leader turned around and glanced at He Dong, not angry about the collision.
As recruits, it’s normal not to respond quickly to commands. That’s why they need training.
The squad leader surveyed them and declared loudly, “In the army tradition, a ‘ticket’ is required to enter the cafeteria!”
Chen Ming was surprised. There’s such a rule?
He Dong, who was starving in front, looked miserable, “What? Squad leader, why didn’t you say earlier? I didn’t bring my wallet.”
“Who needs your money?!” The squad leader scolded, “The ‘ticket’ for the army cafeteria is singing the military song!”
After a pause, the squad leader asked, “Unity is strength. You all know how to sing it, right?”
The group nodded.
The squad leader smiled satisfactorily, “Now, use your full strength to sing it for me! If it’s too quiet, don’t bother entering the cafeteria!”
