Chapter 46 - Uninvited guests
Before the spiders could get closer, Yang Yi had already rushed to the bow of the ship, preparing to control the Nightmare Star and make a quick escape.
If all the spiders jumped onto the ship, the consequences would be unimaginable!
Fortunately, they were afraid of water and stopped at the shoreline, making no further movements.
What was even more astonishing was that the spiders could talk!
Spider A: "It smells so good!"
Spider B (special entity): "There's something delicious here!"
Spider C: "It smells amazing!"
Yang Yi froze for a few seconds, hardly able to believe his ears.
"Am I going crazy? Am I hearing things?"
He immediately notified Suna.
"Suna, come to the deck quickly. These spiders seem to be able to talk!"
Receiving the private message, Suna rushed out in an instant.
Her eyes were quickly drawn to the special entity with part of a human body on its head.
"Did you hear that? These spiders are speaking human language, and it's in perfect Mandarin!" Yang Yi asked Suna.
Suna frowned, looked at Yang Yi strangely, and said she didn't hear anything.
Yang Yi was startled and quickly realised the problem was with him. His sanity level was still over 80, which meant he wasn't going insane.
That could only mean the "Spider’s Kiss” must have a hidden effect, allowing the player to understand the spiders' speech, and possibly…even communicate with them!
Yang Yi immediately tried, putting on a warm, friendly smile, and called out to the spiders.
"Come! Come! I have plenty of food here! When you eat, don't forget to take some back to share with everyone!"
As he spoke, he tossed the last bit of spoilt food to the spiders.
Spider A: "Great!"
Spider B: "I'll bring some back for Mom to try!"
Spider C: "Thank you!"
Yang Yi grinned and tossed several more packs of "delicacies" to Spider B.
Even though he could communicate with the spiders, he didn’t sympathise with them. After all, they were monsters who killed without blinking, especially the one with part of a human body attached to it.
Before Yang Yi arrived, they had already killed several players.
He threw all the remaining "delicacies" to the spiders, receiving many words of gratitude in return.
Waving kindly, he watched the giant spider with a human body part on its head leave. As it departed, its tail dragged a large bundle of food wrapped in spider silk.
"Eat as much as you like; I'll be back tomorrow!" Yang Yi shouted, not caring if the spiders understood him.
After tossing this batch of rotten food, Yang Yi sailed the Nightmare Star away from the island.
With some time to spare, he caught three coral cage fish and asked Suna to make over 60 bottles of Spiderbane Potion.
One dose of poison wouldn't be enough to kill all the spiders.
Yang Yi planned to poison them a few more times before returning to the island, ensuring it would be much safer.
For the next three days, Yang Yi repeated his actions.
Due to his large purchases of spoilt food, he earned the nickname "Garbage Collector" in the chat channels.
Fortunately, Yang Yi preferred to do business anonymously, and only a few friends knew his real identity.
"What exactly are you doing?" The captain of the Radiant Goddess, Zhou Dai, sent him a private message.
Since they were old friends, Yang Yi had no intention of hiding anything.
"I'm trying to poison the monsters and see if I can kill them with it," Yang Yi replied.
"So, you're pretty good at dealing with monsters?"
On the fourth day, Yang Yi continued with his plan, and no more spiders came asking for food.
What it meant was most of the spiders on the island were likely dead, and he could go ashore the day after.
That evening, Yang Yi was in the cabin packing his gear to make sure he had everything he needed in his stomach pouch.
Suna went over too.
"What? You want to come as well?" Yang Yi frowned, looking at Suna.
"Yes, I want to go too!"
"But if you come, there'll be no one left to guard the Nightmare Star! What if we run into other players?" Yang Yi was reluctant to bring Suna along.
"Just take the crystal ball with you! The island is only so big, it won't be out of range!" Suna replied.
Yang Yi thought it over and eventually agreed.
Even if he refused, knowing Suna, she would probably follow secretly anyway.
It was better to let her come along.
The two of them made all the preparations, including weapons, potions, rations, and freshwater.
Yang Yi's weapons included a flintlock pistol, a spoilt sea serpent's fang, a spare chef's knife, one bottle of red unknown potion, two bottles of regeneration potion, two bottles of coconut juice refreshment, and two bottles of Spiderbane Potion. (Yang Yi had also asked Suna to make a few more regeneration potions.)
Suna's weapons were a pirate longbow, over forty poison-coated iron arrows, two bottles of regeneration potion, two bottles of coconut juice refreshment, two bottles of Spiderbane Potion, a witch's dagger, and a treasure bag containing two loaves of black bread and some sausages.
As for water, they each carried 2 litres.
Once everything was ready, they returned to their rooms to rest and recover their energy, ensuring they would be in good condition.
Yang Yi was a light sleeper, troubled by nightmares, so he relied on coconut juice refreshment to restore his energy.
However, he had only just fallen asleep when he was awakened by a sudden vibration and sat up.
The crystal ball by the bed was shaking violently, indicating that a player had appeared nearby!
Alert, Yang Yi immediately checked the sea chart.
The name of the ship was also displayed on the sea chart: "Good Fortune."
He quickly searched for the name and activated the "Scrying" skill.
[Searching... Good Fortune...]
There were more than a dozen results.
The Good Fortune was an ordinary ship, and the name had been chosen by the player. (Ordinary ships can be renamed once, as long as they don't share the same name as a special ship.)
Yang Yi randomly picked one, but it turned out to be the wrong target.
He had no choice but to close the image and check the sea chart, speculating on the purpose of the Good Fortune.
"Speed: about 40 knots, though it might not be at full speed...
This route...looks like they're heading straight for the island!"
The Good Fortune was 100 nautical miles from the island, but its course was dead on, heading directly toward the island.
It was likely no coincidence. The player probably had the coordinates of the island!
After some thought, Yang Yi decided to follow and observe.
He had prepared extensively for this island, and with the "Spider’s Kiss" status to deal with, he couldn't let someone beat him to it!
"Five hours until dawn. I doubt they'd dare land on the island at night."
Yang Yi controlled the Nightmare Star, approaching the Good Fortune from the side, keeping a safe distance.
He decided to wait until dawn to assess the situation before taking further action.
If the ship had cannons, Yang Yi could find a place to sneak ashore and have a little "conversation" with the player on land.
If it didn't have cannons, it would be easy — he'd just charge in.
And don't forget, Yang Yi’s ship had a catapult!
Plus, the Nightmare Star had a rare ship attachment: the head of a giant bobbit worm! It could tear a huge hole in their ship with one bite!
"Other players?"
Suna had woken up, noticing Yang Yi at the helm, his eyes fixed on the crystal ball.
"Yes, we'll follow them at dawn. I doubt they'd dare land on the island at night, so no rush!"
A few hours later, the sky quickly brightened.
Yang Yi leaned against the ship's wheel, keeping an eye on the crystal ball all night.
As the Good Fortune approached the island, it stopped moving, leaving Yang Yi waiting for nothing.
He woke Suna, telling her to take the helm and move closer to the Good Fortune.
Meanwhile, he pulled out his telescope and climbed up the mast.
[Name: Ordinary Telescope]
[Type: Treasure]
[Quality: Common]
[Description: A simple, ordinary telescope. In good lighting conditions, it can clearly see ships up to 10 nautical miles away.]
As the distance closed, Yang Yi finally got a good look at the other ship.
"They don't even have cannons?"
"And it's just a second-level ordinary ship?"
Yang Yi was stunned, realising he had been overly cautious.
The ship was similar to Hu Wei's large sailboat design but slightly smaller, clearly only a second-level ship.
He told Suna to go full speed ahead as they approached, preparing to see who was on board.
