Endless Horde: Through the Eyes of a Godking

Chapter 456 Dorms, Bunkers, and Mockery

--

The cadets stayed within the protection of the building, waiting until the 'cleaners' cleaned up the remaining air of the void, making it safe for them to leave.

So long as there were even traces of the air of the void around, it wouldn't be safe for the cadets to leave even with their Void Suits on. After all, the corosion of the void air was far more than what their beginner-class Void Suit can endure for now.

The female officer that dealt with the horde of voidlings harassing the barrier earlier didn't stay for long. She just confirmed their well-being, expressed her mild surprise at Cedric's competence, and left shortly after. Just like the rest, she too was busy, and she's needed elsewhere.

Cedric forgot to ask for her name, but he didn't think too much of it. He figured that since this camp was understaffed anyway, he'd discover who she was eventually.

The cadets had to stay put for about an hour before another officer came and told them that they were free to go. That officer led them to the dorms, where they could retire for the day.

Usually, after getting their standard-issued equipment, the cadets will be led on a tour of the camp, familiarizing them and giving them a first impression. They will also be introduced to some of the important personnel of the camp, just so that they'll know their place and who their superiors were.

Unfortunately, this batch of cadets was unlucky; some would dare say the unluckiest even. It hasn't even been a whole day since they arrived, yet they're already exposed to the true horrors of this work.

Stay tuned with empire

This forced some changes to be made, and it couldn't be helped. They'd just have to adjust.

Upon arriving at the dorms, the cadets couldn't help but feel relieved. They've already rested enough after the whole calamity, thanks to the saving grace of that female officer, but their nerves have yet to truly relax. It wasn't until they arrived here in silence and peace that they felt fatigue catching up to them.

Some of the cadets immediately collapsed on the beds, refusing to move a muscle. They were too tired to do anything worthwhile. Others found a place to sit down and reflect on what happened.

Then there's Cedric, who immediately hopped into the showers to clean himself. It's not like he got touched by the dirt and grime of the voidlings; in fact, he was completely unscathed, protected behind the barrier while killing thousands of them in return.

Nevertheless, he still felt a little dirty, so taking a bath was an obvious thing to do.

Done with his bath, Cedric made his way to the bunker beds. He picked the one in the corner and settled down.

While these bunker beds looked like the same ones from Prime Earth, there is a massive difference. The most obvious one was the occupancy function in it that emits a sign when a bed is occupied by someone. If any other cadets use this bed instead of the user, the bed will release a warning signal.

The biggest difference is in the space of the bed. Sure, in plain sight, the bunker beds looked small like those single-sized beds. But once it is occupied and the user pulls the curtains to seal themselves out, the space inside the bed warps and extends, turning into an apartment-sized space where cadets can freely move around and do their thing.

It was such a magical thing. Cedric himself wondered why he hadn't thought about creating something like this before.

The bed itself turns into a king-sized bed. Also, other furniture and equipment only appear once the registered user of the bed appears in this space. It's such a niche thing, and Cedric was glad to have it.

In addition, the space inside isn't really disconnected to the outside. Even while inside this room, Cedric could still hear what's happening outside. If something requires him to go out of the room, he could just deactivate the enchantment and part the curtains to get out. Others would also hear him without getting out if he wanted to. And should the noise outside becomes a little too much for his liking, Cedric could dampen it so that he can rest easily.

How convenient, indeed...

"I want to go home," said one of the cadets sitting on his bed. He wore a downcast expression, evidently from the harrowing first day at work.

"That ain't going to happen, Bro." Another cadet responded, "You either finish your tenure here or you die honorably in duty. There's no in between."

Yes, this is correct. Once you sign up for the camp and successfully arrive here, there's no turning back. Even if you fail the screening or the initial training, you'd still be required to stay for 10 years at minimum. Even those who failed will find use in the place because there's just too many jobs to do and not enough people to do them.

"I can't believe this!" said Grunt, the one-eyed Celestial, wearing a displeased expression. "How can they be so irresponsible? Forget about this horrible first day; how can they let those monsters invade like that? Are they not doing their jobs properly? Where had all the tributes and the funding they receive gone? In their pockets? Hmph! My father will hear about this."

"Oh, buddy. AHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

One of the cadets belonging to 'The Six', appearing to be someone from the Spirit Race, suddenly burst into a fit of laughter, whicb awfully sounding like he's mocking Grunt's serious tantrums.

"You're unbelievable. PAHAHAHAHAHA!" The spirit cackled with tears running down his face. "Saying shit like 'My father will hear about this'! Pfft! Do you really think that your father has that much face and authority to intimidate the Border Patrol Guardians? If you think so, then shit! You're way too fucking delusional!"

"Forget about doing something; if your father, whoever he is, even thought about anything remotely negative about the Border Patrol Guardians, he'd be beheaded by the Chancellors without any further deliberations."

"How dare you!?" Grunt roared. "Who are you to comment on us celestials?"

The Spirit then looked at the fuming celestial with a teasing look and said, "And who do you think you are to scold the Border Patrol Guardians, hmm?"

"Who the hell did you save in your past life and make you a saint today? Tell me any or all of your achievements that benefitted the entire Primeval Scarlet Dust Realm, which gave you the right to be upset about how the Border Patrol Guardians do their thing. Come on, I'm waiting."

"Grunt was speechless and obviously mad. Only the sound of his teeth grinding could be heard from him.

"Hmm? Oh, yes! That's right. You did nothing." The spirit fearlessly and ruthlessly mocked him. "You are nothing in the grand scheme of things. You are worthless, and so is your father. Why else were you sent here instead of doing something productive back at home? Hmm?"

"Aww, a spoiled little brat with delusions of grandeur was found throwing tantrums because he didn't get his way. My, horrible! PAHAHAHAHAHA!"

"Shut up! You speak as if you're any better! Then how did you end up here, huh?"

"That's because I wanted to be here, you silly little brat." The spirit replied with a snort. "Because unlike some entitled son of a bitch somewhere, I've long since admired the Border Patrol Guardians. Additionally, if I can pass their assessment, I will have more access to resources, which will make my path to the Cosmic Level easier."

"Oh, and just so you know. Even if you happened to be one of the many children of the Celestial Chancellor, even he wouldn't dare to prance around and throw his weight at the Border Patrol Guardians, especially if he didn't want to upset the other Chancellors."

"What happened earlier was just unlucky. The Scarlet Division Wall isn't a static protection for the entire realm. It has been there since the dawn of creation and has been resisting the erosion of the void ever since. It's not surprising that there's bound to be a hole or two in it, allowing the Void Creatures to pass."

"The Scarlet Division Wall rotates and revolves around to protect the realm. One of such holes might just happen to overlap at the location of this camp, allowing the void creatures on the other side to pass through."

"Such an event is completely out of the Border Patrol Guardian's control, so not even the Chancellors will blame them, even if we were all to die in that event."

"The Chancellors would choose to eat their losses instead of offending the Border Patrol Guardians. You wanna know why?"

"..."Nôv(el)B\\jnn

"Because the losses they will face if the Border Patrol Guardians decide to rebel will be far more devastating. And the guardians didn't even have to do much. They could just declare inactivity from their duties...you know, like taking a vacation? And believe me, that will be enough to cause panic for the entirety of the Divine Council."

The spirit then sneered at the cyclops before saying:

"Know your place, kid. Your identity and privileges hold no meaning here."
